What is a genealogy lead?
Genealogy leads are the names, and other contact data such as email, telephone, fax, physical address (depending on the list) etc. of people who have been actively involved with some type of home based business. These people are buyers who took action by joining one or more of the following business opportunities respectively… MLM, networking, high ticket, top tier, direct sales, gifting, affiliate etc.
How are genealogy leads obtained?
MLM is a great example. MLM companies are well known for having the best compensation plan during their initial pre-launch phase. During this time they want to generate as much interest as possible and also attract as many new distributors as they can. They know the best way to do this is to offer the most lucrative compensation plan. This will create a buzz in the industry and get people talking to their teams etc. This will also cause many who become distributors to also get on auto ship to buy the companies products each month. This concept is called “forced product consumption.” It’s very effective and why many companies wrap the MLM model around their product. However, as is often the case, after a sufficient time period has elapsed and the company feels they have enough momentum going and once the distributor numbers are where they want them, they will change the compensation plan. As you might imagine, it usually favors the company more than it does the distributors. And this tends to upset many. Some are so upset that they choose to leave and look for something else. However, before they go… the smart ones log in to their back office and they download their entire organization. This can include the name, email, telephone, fax, physical address etc.of each person in their organization.
How is a genealogy lead different than a opportunity seeker?
Genealogy leads are actual buyers. Business opportunity seekers are typically just tire kickers. There are many cheap little software programs that claim to spider the web based upon your search criteria. They claim all you need to do is enter a keyword or company name, and the software will “scrape” or “harvest” the email and or telephone number from the pages it finds that also include your keyword(s) and / or company name(s) etc. To the newbie this sounds like a gold mine. However, to the seasoned marketing veteran, we know better. Scraping software is just that. It’s software. It only does one thing. You enter a keyword and it spiders the internet looking for pages that contain that keyword. Let’s say for example that there is a forum where many people are talking about a particular company. And let’s say they are all very disgruntled about marketers and their approach etc. And let’s say that none of these people were every actively involved with the company. They are merely venting and sharing their frustrations. And let’s say a few of them shared their telephone number in their forum signature. I think you can see where this is going. The software has no way of knowing any of the above. It only does one thing. And that is scrape or harvest the telephone number from the page. And so now let’s say you used software, or you got a list that was scraped, and the list if comprised of numbers that were gathered in this manner. Can you see how this could be a real problem for you? Keep reading to have your eyes opened wide. The only people who will try and convince you that scraper or harvested leads are great, are the people who are trying to either sell the lists or the cheap software to you. Always remember that. There are people who hate all marketers, especially telemarketers. And these people have gone to great lengths in an effort to stop us. A great example of this is “bait pages”. A bait page is a page that is created with one goal in mind. That is to attract the scrapers and harvesting software and get them to gather the telephone numbers on the pages they have created. Here’s how they do it. First they Google the names of many business opportunities, MLM companies etc. Then they include many keywords that marketers often enter in to the scraper / harvesting software. Then they do something that is incredibly shady. They set up various pages online that include all of the aforementioned keywords, company names etc. And last but not least, they also include the telephone numbers of the Federal Trade Commission, Attorney General‘s offices, law firms across the USA, and any other agency or individual they feel would cause trouble and headaches for anyone who contacts them with any sort of marketing offer. Sounds pretty scary huh? Well it is. And it is NOT something you ever want to be part of. So how do you protect yourself from inadvertently calling any of these people or agencies and putting yourself in the direct line of fire for legal issues, fines, headaches etc. It’s actually very simple. Never contact anyone on any scraped or harvested list. And this is another BIG reason why you should always go with targeted genealogy lead lists every time. They are buyers and you know where they came from. Another very important distinction to make is that many unscrupulous lead and list brokers sell scraped leads and claim they are genealogy leads. They are NOT. Scraped leads are scraped leads. They were scraped using cheap software. Genealogy leads came direct from the back office of companies. The difference between these types of leads is night and day. Genealogy leads are what you want. Hands down they are the best.
What are incentivized leads?
Have you ever been surfing the web and ran across a popup asking if you would like to enter to win a laptop, a vacation or something else? - They also don’t have a problem spending another $200. a month on auto ship.
- They also are okay with the MLM business model concept including the compensation plan.
- They also are open to nutritional health type products. Perhaps they are in to fitness and wellness etc.
So, if you have a product or service that fits in to the areas of health, wellness, fitness, of course MLM, this would be a highly targeted list for you to share your offer with. The people on this list would be most likely to have a genuine interest in your offer based upon the aforementioned criteria.

What about the National Do Not Call Registry?
The bottom line is you have to follow the rules. There are varied personal interpretations of those rules. One of those has to do with whether or not you should scrub your lists. Some believe you can get around the rules if you use a “survey” approach instead of a more direct sales approach. Most tend to go with a “business to business” call approach which is exempt from the DNC. All lead lists are in the industry standard .csv format. This format can be very easily opened in any .csv reader such as Excel. Chances are you already have it or software installed on your computer that will read .csv files. If not, you can easily Google it to quickly locate several free options.

What about the lead lists being over saturated?
This question comes up a lot. It’s a fair question. However, you have to understand there are several variables involved. First, think about all the different brands of products on store shelves… soap, bread, soda, shampoo, the list is endless. The question is how can each company still manage to sell tons of their product despite so much competition? The answer is different people like different things.
Think about a business opportunity magazine with many ads in the back appearing side by side. The advertisers continue to place their ads and the magazines always do very well in ad sales. This obviously proves the competition doesn’t bother anyone nor slow down their sales. What it boils down to is the actual offer and how it is being presented.
Speaking of presentation… not everyone is a great presenter. Let’s say Bill, Todd, and Sally managed to get their hands on the same list. Bill is a MLM guy. Todd is doing a Gifting activity. And Sally is in a Top Tier program. So we have three different opportunities. Each being presented by a different person. Now let’s say all three are doing voice broadcasting. And (even though it’s rare) let’s say that somehow Bill, Todd, and Sally managed to all decide to work the same list the same day. The issue then becomes who is interested in which offer. Let’s say the list is 5,000 people who received all three offers. Human nature will dictate that a certain percentage will be open and interested in Bill’s offer… a certain percentage in Todd’s offer… a certain percentage in Sally’s offer. Then on top of that, another thing to consider is the offers themselves. How good are they. Remember, presentation is obviously very important in sales.

Let’s say Mary is involved in a Gifting activity. She is going to be interested in other like-mined people who share her passion, and believe in receiving cash in the mail without a product being offered. She is not interested in team building, training etc.
Let’s say Mike is involved in a High Ticket opportunity. He is going to be interested in other like-minded people who share his passion for the High Ticket, large income per sale business model.
Let’s say Julie is an affiliate selling other people’s products, programs, services, training courses etc. She is going to be interested in prospects who are willing to spend in the low to mid ticket, sometimes higher price range.
If you look at the examples above, one easy distinction is that John isn’t interested in gifting leads and Mary isn’t interested in MLM leads. The obvious reason is that the compensation models are completely different. John would be wasting his time trying to recruit people who are passionate about the gifting activity, and likewise Mary would be wasting hers approaching MLM prospects.
This is one of many reasons why it’s very important who you purchase leads from. You always want to make sure you are sending a good offer to a targeted list that is most likely to be open and receptive to your offer. Then and only then can the “numbers work in your favor” as they say.

For example, if you call me requesting a specific list and I have already sold it earlier in the day and I know someone else is about to send an offer to it, I will tell you. It’s just the fair thing to do. It’s a good ethical business practice.
